Coupling

Back in the days when a series was a big hit, the couple in the show would become an unforgettable pair. They would get recognition and receive praises from the audience, saying they look like an onscreen couple. For example, Andy Lau & Idy Chan, Tony Leung Chiu Wai & Maggie Cheung, Felix Wong & Barbara Yung, Stephen Chow & Sandra Ng, Chow Yun Fat & Carol Cheng, etc.

Back then, the couple’s outer appearance looked very compatible.

Now TVB pairs up couples according to their popularity status or ranking. For example, Moses Chan & Charmaine Sheh, Ron Ng & Kate Tsui, Bosco Wong & Bernice Liu, Bowie Lam & Melissa Ng, etc.

A good-looking male with a pretty female should be a match, right? Wrong! For example, Moses looks too tall for Charmaine, and Charmaine looks too young, but in reality she is only 4 years younger than Moses. Ron and Kate are nothing close to a matching pair. It is very awkward for Bernice to be paired up with Bosco because it seems as if Bernice is too big for Bosco. There is no sense of security for this couple. As for Bowie and Melissa, Melissa does not give me the impression that she would fall for the Bowie kind of person. It is even more accepting when she pairs up Roger Kwok, Kenny Wong, or Joe Ma.

For most cases, the height of one person can really affect the outer appearance of a pair. For example, Moses pairing up with Flora Chan, who is only 5'4", while Moses is 6'. Moses can also pair up with taller female artistes like Ada Choi or Yoyo Mung. For Bosco's situation, he should always be paired off with female artistes who are shorter like Tavia Yeung, Shirley Yeung, or Leila Tong. The only person taller than these 3 who suits Bosco best is Myolie Wu.

Other than the outer appearance of a couple to match, they must also have the matching 5 facial features as well. The 5 features include the face, eyes, ears, mouth, and nose. Nick Cheung and Esther Kwan have very similar facial features.

I may have some prejudice against some because I have already recognized certain artistes to be paired up with whom to be onscreen couples. If TVB pairs them up right, I will have no complaints.

TVB should consider having their artistes paired up according to their outer appearance and facial features and not have them paired up due to status or ranking.
